SEO for AI: how your company can be found and cited in answers

Practical ways to help company pages get crawled, understood and considered as sources in AI-powered search.

Short answer

To improve eligibility for citations in AI search, make pages accessible to search engines, answer real questions clearly, show first-hand expertise and keep facts and structured data consistent. No technique guarantees that a system will cite a site.

SEO remains the foundation

Generative search experiences retrieve information available on the web and show supporting links. Technical discovery, indexing and useful content therefore remain important. A page that cannot be crawled or indexed does not gain a special path just because it was written for AI.

Google says the requirements are the same as for traditional Search; there is no special markup that guarantees inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Inclusion and citations depend on search systems.

Answer a specific question

Start with questions customers actually ask: how to choose a software partner, when to connect two systems, or what to compare before choosing a CRM. Lead with a direct answer, explain the criteria and state the limits.

Content is more useful when it includes verifiable experience: project decisions, examples without confidential data, trade-offs, process and accountable authorship. Generic summaries offer little reason to become a source.

Make facts easy to verify

Do not promise an outcome the site cannot control. A team can make information accessible, consistent and useful; it cannot force a model to select a particular brand.

  • Publish accessible HTML, fast pages, internal links and a dedicated page for each key service, project and article.
  • Use descriptive headings, identifiable authors, real publication or review dates and primary sources for verifiable claims.
  • Keep structured data consistent with visible content; schema describes a page, it does not replace trustworthy content.
  • Explain who provides the service, where they work, how they operate and what is available now.
  • Monitor indexing and search results in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

What is not a shortcut

There is no ideal word count, “chunking” formula or magic file that places a site in answers. An AI-readable content map may be useful, but Google says files such as llms.txt are not required for its generative search features.

The best investment is still improving material a person would want to consult, fixing technical problems and showing why the company has experience in the subject.
