GEO and SEO: what changes in generative search
What GEO means, what remains the same as SEO, and how to prioritize work without shortcut claims.
Short answer
GEO describes efforts to make content clear and useful in generative search. In practice, the fundamentals remain SEO: crawling, indexing, original information, good experience, links and reliable facts. No separate optimization guarantees citations.
GEO is a lens, not a switch
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is a term for work on content visibility in AI-generated answers. It can help organize a content strategy, but it does not mean there is one universal algorithm or a secret ranking checklist.
Each service retrieves, selects and presents sources differently. Editors can work on clarity, relevance and access; they cannot control the final answer.
What changes for publishers
People ask more conversational, combined questions: not only “software house,” but “how do I choose a software house to connect ERP and sales without stopping operations?” A useful page should address the subject and context, without creating dozens of nearly identical pages for query variations.
Original experience matters: practical lessons, decision criteria, examples, limitations and sources. The company should also be identifiable beyond one page, through consistent naming, clear services, people, case studies and verifiable references.
A realistic priority list
Then monitor queries, indexing and observable citations. Treat GEO as part of discoverability and site quality, not as a contractual promise to appear in AI answers.
- First fix crawl blockers, duplicate pages, slow loading or important content hidden behind interactions.
- Create pages that explain a service, audience, process or project in enough depth to support a decision.
- Use navigation and internal links to connect services, case studies, articles and useful FAQs.
- Apply appropriate structured data without adding invisible or conflicting claims.
- Review information when a product, timeline, price or policy has genuinely changed.
