Bash-inspired shell in C

A Bash-inspired shell written in C to study the foundations of the command line.

The challenge

A shell looks like a small prompt, but it is the layer that interprets a command and asks the operating system to run work.

We built a Bash-inspired shell in C as a low-level learning project. The work focuses on understanding the shape of a command interpreter and its relationship with processes, without claiming complete Bash compatibility.

What we built

A product made of connected parts.

01

Command interpretation

Study how text entered at a prompt becomes an instruction for the system.

02

Process model

Explore the operating system concepts involved when a shell starts a command.

03

C systems programming

Work close to native process APIs and memory rather than relying on a ready-made shell runtime.

The result

The clone is a practical way to explore the command-line interface as a software system. The page describes the project goal and avoids implying feature parity with GNU Bash.
